The terms digital marketing and online marketing are often used interchangeably. While these subjects are covering similar topics, there is a fine, but distinct difference between them. Let this article explain the meaning, similarities and contrasts of online marketing versus digital marketing.
Digital Marketing as an Umbrella Term
Digital Marketing describes all marketing activity, that requires an electronic device - such as a smartphone, tablet, but also a television screen, e-books or podcasts. With the rise of digital platforms in the 21st century, the importance of digital marketing is growing. It is therefore steadily replacing traditional marketing.
Online Marketing as a Subset of Digital Marketing
The term online marketing describes all advertising and marketing measures, that require the use of the internet. Examples are blogs, websites, social networks and e-mail. The main focus of online marketing is the attraction of customers and the building of a successful online presence.
The difference between online marketing and digital marketing is however miniscule. Companies, that want to implement a successful advertising strategy, must not only use a variety of mediums, but also pay attention to current digital marketing trends.
